How to choose an AI plugin

Answer in brief

Name the job, then check four things: whether the AI runs on your computer or online, how much you can change after it acts, whether it opens in your DAW and whether a trial lets you use it on your own songs.

Name the job before the brand

People search for AI plugins as if they were one category, but the jobs barely overlap. A mastering assistant answers how loud and bright a finished mix should be. A vocal synth answers who sings a line, and a builder answers what instrument should play it. Write down the job you repeat most each week and shop for that alone.

Check where the model runs

Some plugins run their model entirely on your computer. Sonic Charge says the Genopatch feature of Sonic Charge Synplant 2 needs no internet connection, and Dreamtonics says Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro renders offline. Others need a connection for part of the work. Studio 56 needs one to make a new instrument or effect, while playing what you made works offline. If you produce on a laptop away from Wi-Fi, ask this before you buy.

Check what you can change after the AI acts

The helpful assistants hand you a starting point and then get out of the way. iZotope describes the Master Assistant in iZotope Ozone 12 as building a tailored preset that you tweak from there. The Mix Assistant in iZotope Neutron 5 builds a signal chain you refine with profiles and macro controls. For generators, look for controls that move the result in a direction you choose, not just a button that rolls the dice again.

Check your DAW and system

Most AI plugins here run as VST3 and AU on Mac and VST3 on Windows, and several add AAX for Pro Tools. DataMind Audio lists every major DAW except Pro Tools for its Combobulator. Studio 56 also runs in most DAWs except Pro Tools, so a Pro Tools user should look at iZotope Ozone 12, sonible smart:EQ 4, Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro or Acon Digital Remix for those jobs.

Use the trial on your own songs

Almost every plugin in the directory can be tried first. iZotope offers 10 days of Ozone 12, sonible offers 30 days of smart:EQ 4, Sonic Charge offers three weeks of Synplant 2 and Dreamtonics offers 14 days of Synthesizer V. Studio 56 Pro begins with a free trial too. Plan the trial for a week when you are actually finishing music, so the plugin meets real problems.

Questions and answers

Are AI plugins better than regular plugins?

Not by default. An assistant saves time on a starting point, and a generator can make sounds a regular synth would not suggest. The final call still comes from your ears, and plenty of great mixes use no AI at all.

The practical advice here is our own. A maker's description of its product is not a test of how it performs.
